Toyota to unveil 'all-new' sedan at N.Y. auto show
Dealers who saw a preview of the car last year said Toyota called it the Avalon successor that is due this fall.
One dealer said the sedan represents a dramatic styling change for the brand.
Toyota has previously declined to comment on future plans and spokesmen weren't immediately available for comment today.
A teaser sketch of the vehicle released today shows fastback styling similar to the coupe-sedan lines of the Volkswagen CC, Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS.
In a statement, Toyota called the sedan's styling "elegant yet athletic."
The sedan is one of 19 new or redesigned U.S. models coming from the Toyota, Lexus and Scion brands this year. The automaker is trying to rebound from two years of declining sales due to the unintended-acceleration recall crisis in 2010 and the Japanese earthquake and tsunami in 2011.
The Avalon has been Toyota's mainstay full-sized sedan since 1995, when it replaced the Cressida as the brand's top-line vehicle. Sales of the car, now in its third generation, have tapered off as the segment has slumped.
Last year, the Avalon accounted for 28,935 U.S. sales -- less than a third of the peak of 104,078 reached in 2000. This year's demand is up 76 percent through February.
The debut will take place at 10:30 a.m. EDT on April 5, Toyota said.

Thank you to Brian for sharing his feedback with us! Keep it up team, great work!
- The experience that my husband and I had at Spitzer Toyota this evening was outstanding!
Our salesman ,Chris, was very friendly and easy going. He was very patient and made us feel very comfortable in the showroom as we waited to sign the paperwork(this process can take awhile). Chris was very upfront and honest with us the entire time. He did not pressure us into anything, but instead helped us to get the specific vehicle we wanted to take home today. There were several others interested in the same vehicle all day...it was such a great deal!!!
Our finance manager, Kelly, was amazing. She helped put us in the vehicle that we so badly wanted to get today. She worked extremely hard to quickly get the financing done for our purchase and at a cost that was comfortable for us. She did not push any unnecessary products, but instead explained which options would be best for us and why. No SURPRISE costs! She explained everything, answered all questions, and gave great advice for future purchases.
The sales manager ,Rob, took the time to introduce himself, speak with us and was extremely friendly. The entire atmosphere of this dealership is like none I have ever been to in the past.
I would recommend this dealership and its employees to anyone who is looking for a relaxed, no pressure, honest, friendly and overall great experience when purchasing your next new or used vehicle. Thanks again Chris and Kelly!!! -brian1429

Scion Announces Pricing for Its 2013 FR-S Sports Car
“Scion’s goal was to create an affordable sports car that true driving enthusiasts could enjoy,” said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. “We accomplished that goal with the FR-S starting under $25,000…a total home run! Add in Scion’s complimentary Scion Service Boost, our no-haggle no-hassle Pure Price, and Scion’s network of about 1,000 dealers, and the FR-S is a grand slam.”
Pure Balance
The FR-S, which stands for Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport; is Scion’s definition of an authentic rear-wheel-drive sports car with exceptionally balanced performance and handling, compelling style, flexible utility and surprising fuel efficiency.
The FR-S is a true “scion,” born into a lengthy history of Toyota performance cars and motorsports. During planning and development, it was most inspired by the AE86 generation of the Corolla, better known as the Hachi-Roku, meaning “8-6” in Japanese. The AE86 was a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe that was lightweight and well balanced, making it a solid choice for driving enthusiasts.
Inspired by the AE86, the FR-S is designed around the core goal of achieving “Pure Balance.” The balance begins with the strategic use of the world’s only flat boxer engine in a front-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration. The engine’s compact size and flat shape allow it to be mounted mid-ship and extremely low, giving the car a dynamically favorable front-to-rear weight ratio of 53:47 and a low center of gravity comparable to some exotic supercars.
The FR-S’s 2.0-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine is the result of a joint development between Toyota and Subaru. The partnership begins by combining Subaru’s newly developed, horizontally opposed engine and Toyota’s cutting edge D-4S injection system that incorporates both direct and port injection. The D-4S system, partnered with a high 12.5:1 compression ratio, results in an impressive 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque.
The flat-four mates with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The manual offers quick, precise shifts with a short-throw; while the automatic features aggressive up shifts and sporty rev-matched down shifts that are initiated by steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Power is transferred to the pavement via a standard Torsen® limited-slip differential.
The idea of “Pure Balance” is further realized by the FR-S’s lightweight design and compact size. The combination allows the car to be quick and nimble into and out of corners, with dynamic maneuverability and confident handling. The coupe’s weight is kept to a minimum by utilizing a lightweight aluminum hood, a solid roof, and by featuring a trunk design instead of a hatchback.
The FR-S’s low weight is matched with a dynamically tuned suspension setup consisting of MacPherson struts up front and a double wishbone system in the rear. Lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels and ventilated disc brakes are standard on all four corners.
Powerful Exterior Design
The fierce exterior of the FR-S is a solid reflection of its inner power. The profile, inspired by the Toyota 2000GT, reveals a hood and roof-line that is remarkably sleek and low, giving it an aerodynamic shape that channels air cleanly over to the top. The low stance continues to exaggerate the coupe’s menacing face, which is made up of sharp lines, a wide mouth and angular headlights that house the projector-beam halogen lamps. The aggressive front fenders protrude upward and boast the iconic ‘86’ piston emblem, which highlights the car’s AE86 heritage as well as its unique new boxer engine. The rear fascia sits low and wide, with aerodynamic lower treatments that surround the sporty dual exhaust system. LEDs illuminate the edgy taillights, while center-mounted backup lights finish the muscular design.
The FR-S will be available in seven colors including Raven, Asphalt, Hot Lava, Argento, Ultramarine, Firestorm and Whiteout.
Performance-Focused Interior
The FR-S’s interior includes a 2+2 seating configuration that is designed with both form and function in mind. The front seats feature deep bolsters and are mounted extremely low and are comfortable yet assertive, while the rear seat folds down flat, creating flexible space. The car will come standard with FR-S badged floor mats. The large center-mounted tachometer is the focus of the three-gauge cluster and features a programmable shift-indicator, informing the driver of the engine’s vitals. Speed is monitored by both digital and analog gauges. The FR-S features a sporty leather-trimmed steering wheel that has both tilt and telescopic adjustment.
The FR-S will come standard with an eight-speaker AM/FM/CD/USB 300-watt maximum output Pioneer™ audio system. Standard features also include HD Radio™ technology and Bluetooth® connectivity that allows both hands-free phone connection as well as streaming audio capability.
Sports Car Performance with Excellent Safety Features
FR-S comes standard with six airbags, including dual-stage advanced driver- and front-passenger airbags, front-seat-mounted airbags and side-curtain airbags.
Like all Scions, FR-S features the Star Safety System that includes Traction Control (TRAC), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Brake Assist (BA), an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Smart Stop Technology (SST).
The delivery, processing and handling (DPH) fee for all Scion models is $730 and is not included in the MSRP. DPH fee for vehicles distributed by Southeast Toyota (SET) and Gulf States Toyota (GST) may vary.
Warranty and Complimentary Scion Service Boost
Like all Scion models, the FR-S is covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile comprehensive warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. The FR-S will come standard with Scion Service Boost, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first, and two years of 24-hour roadside assistance.

Toyota Giving 100 Cars to 100 Nonprofits -- Less Than One Week Left to Apply
Access 100 Cars for Good logo and photos
How 100 Cars for Good Works:
- An independent panel of experts will identify 500 finalists from the applications received. Finalists will be notified in April. Registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and non-profit Native American or Alaskan tribes with sovereignty are eligible to apply.
- Beginning on Monday, May 14, the public will be able to vote on Facebook for the organizations they think should win a new car at www.100carsforgood.com. (This links to a special 100 Cars for Good Facebook page.)
- Five finalist organizations will be profiled each day for 100 consecutive days. Whichever nonprofit has the most votes at the end of the day will win a vehicle.
- Finalists will be eligible for one of six Toyota models. The four runners up every day will each receive a $1,000 grant from Toyota.
- Jim Lentz, President and Chief Operating Officer of Toyota Motor Sales, commented, “At Toyota, we appreciate what a big difference a new car or truck can make for organizations that are doing so much to improve lives and strengthen communities across America. Over the past 20 years, Toyota has contributed more than half a billion dollars to nonprofits throughout the U.S. 100 Cars for Good allows us to build on that commitment in new ways, putting the public in the ‘driver’s seat’ as we work to help community organizations broaden their impact.”
- 100 Cars for Good is also an opportunity for Toyota to help nonprofits develop or expand their digital marketing skills. As part of this commitment, the company will provide every finalist with a digital video camera, training toolkit and free online advertising credits to help support their 100 Cars for Good campaign.
- Molly Reeser, Executive Director of Detroit’s Camp Casey, one of last year’s 100 Cars winners noted, “In addition to a new truck, Toyota gave us the training and resources we needed to get more sophisticated about social media marketing for the long-term. This has had a real impact, with our ‘likes’ on Facebook jumping five-fold very quickly.”

Thank you to the author of this review for sharing their feedback with us! Great work team, keep it up!
- Our experience at Spitzer started off a little rocky with an unprofessional salesman. We were ready to walk away from the agreed upon deal but the new Sales Manager, Jim Christ, was very understanding of our concerns and offered to make things right. Kristy saved the deal by finding us the desired car in a timely fashion. James Howard delivered the car to us and was very friendly and knowledgeable about our Highlander. I would gladly buy another car from James in the future. -woodcrest2

Toyota has most Consumer Reports top models by category
Last time one brand so-dominated the catgory picks was Honda in 2003, CR says, noting that no Hondas won "top pick" status this year. It's the second time in the past three years that honda has been conspicuous by its absence.
CR named the redesigned Camry hybrid the best "Family Sedan" -- not the whole Camry line, just the hybrid. Toyota updated the gas-electric drivetrain for the 2012 model, making it quicker and smoother, and is offering it on a lower price model, so buyers can get one a bit less than $30,000. For buyers who can't afford that tariff, the Hyundai Sonata was top pick for "Affordable Family Sedan" at about $21,000.
Our Test Drive column about the 2012 Camry re-do took special note of the hybrid model. You can read that Test Drive column here.
The CR bouquet comes shortly after Toyota took significant honors in a recent J.D. Power and Associates quality report card. Toyota still is nearly delirious after that one, having been battered so long by bad news -- safety recalls, earthquake/tsunami devastation in Japan that caused worldwide product shortages, floods in Thailand that dried up supplies of computer chips used in auto computers.
CR's criteria for naming top picks include ranking at or near the top of their category on overall road test scores, average or better predicted-reliability ratings in CR's subscriber survey and high performance in government or crash tests. Here are the magazine's top models in 10 vehicle categories:
FAMILY SEDAN: Toyota Camry Hybrid ($29,052). In addition to its impressive 38 mpg overall fuel economy, other high points include a comfortable ride; a roomy, quiet, cabin; fairly quick acceleration;
and for 2012, a nicer interior and somewhat crisper handling (although the Camry is still no sports sedan).
SPORTY CAR: Ford Mustang ($28,880 to $43,880). The heart of this iconic sports car has always been its strong acceleration and rumbling V8 power. But now there's more to the Mustang than power. Agile
handling, a decent ride, comfortable front seats, and very good fit and finish make the current version an inviting package. The Mustang delivers good fuel economy (22-24 mpg) for its class.
SMALL SUV: Toyota RAV4 ($24,405 to $30,328). With a four-cylinder engine, the RAV4 delivers some of the best gas mileage in its class (23 mpg). The spirited V6 version accelerates as quickly as many sports sedans and gets only 1 mpg less than the four-cylinder model.
AFFORDABLE FAMILY SEDAN: Hyundai Sonata ($21,800). CR chose the four-cylinder Sonata as a more affordable alternative to the Camry Hybrid. The Sonata provides a roomy, well-equipped cabin, supple ride, nimble handling, and thrifty 27 mpg overall, for just a little bit more money than many small
sedans.
FAMILY HAULER: Toyota Sienna V6 ($35,810). The Sienna fits the bill nicely for families looking for a comfortable, roomy interior, plenty of features, and the ability to carry up to eight people. Among its high points are lively performance, decent fuel economy (20 mpg), and a comfortable ride, although the
handling is rather lackluster. It's the only minivan that has at least average reliability.
SPORTS SEDAN: Infiniti G ($34,225 to $37,225). The G37's agile handling, blistering acceleration, and comfortable, well-crafted interior make it one of CR's highest-scoring sedans. The G is on this list for the sixth straight year. The less expensive but equally inviting G25 isn't as quick, but gets 24 mpg
overall, 3 more than the G37.
GREEN CAR: Toyota Prius ($26,750 to $28,217). The Prius sets the standard for fuel efficiency, practicality, and affordability with its overall 44 mpg. Its roomy interior, comfortable ride, and hatchback versatility make it easy to live with. The 41 mpg of the new Prius V wagon easily tops its class.
SMALL CAR: Subaru Impreza ($21,345). Redesigned for 2012, the all-wheel-drive Impreza is a well-rounded roomy sedan with nimble handling and a compliant, absorbent ride that rivals some luxury sedans. Fuel economy of 27 mpg overall is impressive for an AWD car.
PICKUP TRUCK: Chevrolet Avalanche ($47,435). The Avalanche provides the best combination of utility and versatility of any pickup CR has tested. Its unified bed and cab help give it a steady, comfortable ride, and the cabin is quiet. Its overall mpg is 14.
FAMILY SUV: Toyota Highlander ($38,578 to $47,255). The refined, comfortable, and quiet Highlander has consistently ranked near the top of its class in CR's road-test scores and has had above-average
reliability. The V6 version delivers a decent 18 mpg overall, and the hybrid model tops all SUVs at 27.
Details on Consumer Reports' Top Picks for 2012, Automaker Report Cards, Best and Worst list and other key findings are available in the April issue of ConsumerReports on newsstands March 6 or at the magazine's website here.
Consumer Reports says its tests include more than 50 individual tests on every vehicle, including evaluations of braking, handling, comfort, convenience, safety and fuel economy.
Roughly 6,000 miles of general driving and evaluations are racked up on each test car during the testing process. CR buys all its test cars anonymously from dealers.
